C I Host offers free email, web hosting for victims of World Trade Center and Pentagon bombing and their families; call center services, web space to American and United Airlines

As Internet plays vital role in America's reaction to Tuesday's attack, C I Host reaches out to victims and to ensure the security of the country's communication backbone

Bedford, Texas (September 11, 2001) - Stunned and angered by Tuesday's vicious attacks on the U.S., C I Host is working around the clock to reach out to the victims of the disasters and to ensure the safety and health of the Internet, which has become the nation's information and commercial backbone.

"First I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to all the individuals and families who have been hurt or lost loved ones due to this senseless act of barbarism," said Christopher Faulkner, CEO of C I Host. "Their lives have been forever changed; so have ours."

C I Host is monitoring its network 24/7 and working with the FBI in the cities where its servers are located to protect its share of the Web from attacks and to be able to alert the authorities to any unusual disturbances or indications of future attacks.

"For many people in my generation, war just moved out of the movies and older relatives' stories and into our lives," said Faulkner, 24. "It's our Pearl Harbor, and whatever our role in this society is, we need to step up and do all we can to help America survive this attack, continue to function at the highest levels, and achieve a greater level of security."

For the first time, the Internet is mature and pervasive enough to play a major role in how the U.S. handles a major conflict.

In the first few hours after two highjacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center and one slammed into the Pentagon Tuesday morning, web sites for major news outlets and the airlines whose planes were high-jacked were swamped.

People emailed friends and relatives in New York City and Washington DC from all over the globe to see if they were safe. Chat rooms were quickly established to share information. As the day wore on, even though cell phones couldn't get through and land phone lines were backed up, the Internet was still sending and receiving mail.

"Because we know that the service we provide will be crucial in the coming days, we are offering free email and web-hosting to victims of the attacks and their families," Faulkner said. "And we must realize that in any extended conflict, email and personal web sites are likely to form crucial links between our military and their families. The picture of the lonely soldier writing home by candlelight this time will be more likely - still a lonely soldier - but one queuing up to use the computer and hoping his or her email will reach home."

C I Host has taken the following steps to fulfill our responsibilities at this crucial juncture in history.
  • Offering free email and web-hosting the victims of the tragedy and their families. Dial up accounts will be only $8 a month. These accounts can be set up within minutes by calling 888-868-9931 and speaking to a sales associate.
  • Working with United and American Airlines to offer them the technological and employee services of our call center and to provide them with web site space and streaming media.
  • Coordinating a citywide blood drive and serving as a drop-off site for people wishing to donate needed items to the American Red Cross to help the victims.
  • Working with the FBI in Dallas, Los Angeles and Chicago (where our servers are housed), to ensure that every one of our clients servers is safe and protected from hacking attacks or other malicious activity.
  • Monitoring all our servers 24/7 to be sure that if there are any Internet disruptions we can divert traffic flow to one of our three Internet Datacenters to ensure that all websites crucial to communication remain operational.

"The attacks on September 11 were on the business and defense centers of the U.S.," Faulkner said. "If attacks on our communications systems are also in the minds of our enemies, we must prevent those attacks from being carried out. Web hosting companies and Internet service providers across the U.S. must take steps to make sure their networks are healthy and minimize the ability of aggressors to bring down this indispensable communications network."

In addtion C I Host will match up to $50,000 on a dollar-for-dollar basis of donations made by its 190 employees.

"Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to everyone touched by this tragedy," said Faulkner. "But we know it takes more than kind thoughts for people to recover from something like this. That's why we are setting up this matching disaster fund so our company, jointly with our employees, can provide tangible help for the victims of this disaster and their families."
